Fairview man arrested for infant abuse and attempted murder

Yopher Jimenez of Fairview, New JerseyFAIRVIEW, N.J. - A Fairview man was arrested Sunday night, after cops received an emergency 911 call that an infant was not breathing.

Yopher Andres Jimenez, age 23, was charged with attempted murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and aggravated assault. The arrest came about as a result of an investigation conducted by members of the Fairview Police Department, under the direction of Chief John Pinzone, with the county child abuse unit.

According to authorities, on Sunday evening, April 4, Fairview Police were dispatched to 452 Harding Place in Fairview on a 911 report of an infant not breathing. Upon arrival, police found a one-year-old infant unresponsive and not breathing.

The infant was subsequently transported by Fairview ambulance to Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, where the infant was put on a ventilator. The infant was subsequently transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson for further evaluation and treatment.

Further tests were done and it was determined that the infant had several fractures of the ribs at various stages of healing, and a skull fracture that appeared to be consistent with child abuse. The skull fracture appeared to be a recent injury.

As a result of the findings at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, an investigation was law enforcement authorities, which reportedly revealed that the boyfriend of the infant's mother, Yopher Andres Jimenez, was allegedly responsible for causing the injuries to the infant by striking the infant with his hand and holding the infant's head under water in a bath tub in an attempt to drown the infant.

According to police, Jimenez and the infant's mother have had a dating relationship since May of 2009, and he is not the biological father of the infant.

The couple reportedly just moved to their Fairview residence on Saturday, April 3, prior to which they had lived in Hasbrouck Heights for one month and in south Florida before that.

Bail was set by Superior Court Judge Harry Carroll at $750,000.00 dollars with no 10% option and no contact with the victim. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were notified and an Immigration Detainer was placed on Jimenez. Jimenez was subsequently remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.
